I’ve had several questions on this blog regarding burns from hot glue guns. Unfortunately, I’ve experienced these burns myself. I found the following information on gluegunsdirect.com The best thing to do is use extra care when using glue guns to avoid burns.
Remember — A hot glue burn IS LIKE ANY OTHER BURN AND MUST BE TREATED AS SUCH!
IT IS GOING TO HURT FOR AWHILE LIKE ANY BURN!
SKIN CONTACT
Skin affected by molten hot melt should be plunged into cool water immediately until the burning sensation subsides or for about 10 minutes. If no tap is available, have a bowl of clean, cold water available. If coated with hot melt, move fingers to prevent a tourniquet effect as it cools. Do not remove the glue when molten, as it might remove skin to quite a depth, leaving a raw wound. Even when solid, remove with care as the above may still occur. If difficult to remove, with medical approval, olive oil can be soaked into a cotton ball and placed over the glue on skin. This will slowly soften the glue into the pad. If unsure, always seek medical attention. When hot melt is removed from skin, treat as a normal first degree burn (red, some swelling and painful), leave it alone. Vinegar may be dabbed on it for pain. Honey is also good to dab on gently to speed healing. If it is a second degree burn (blistering) dab on some vinegar, let dry and wrap lightly in sterile gauze. NEVER use butter, oil or ice on burns or break any blisters as this can cause infection.
If burn is not better in a few days or at any point that it gets worse, seek medical help.
i already put ice on it and it burns like HELL i think i got a 2nd degree burn and i put petrolyum jelly on it HELP!
well, 1st off, dont put petroleum jelly on it!!! try not to keep ice on it, because the ice can pop any blisters, or cause more blistering. instead, dip your finger in a glass of ice water to cool it. try to slowly apply a little pressure to the area, unless it is absolute sheer pain. moving it will also help.
I did the same while putting together a project, I squeezed glue directly on my finger by accident, I put ice on it but right now i’m letting it sit in cold water, can I put ice in the water to keep it cold?
Today another dramatic experience, THE HOT GLUE MONSTER GUN.
Please no child should use this glue gun without the watchful eye of a wise adult, hint. First use very cold gentle flowing water, rubbing the glue off easily as the glue lifts. Don’t cry, suppress those tears until you accomplish removing the glue. When done just get an ice pack until you find a gauze and some burn gel. Cover the burn sight very carefully and tight as u can stand it.
It will still burn tremendously, but don’t lay the ice pack on the burn but near the sight to distract it from the sight, just as a soothing method. Of course now, this is a very good time to let the tears flow until the pain ease while your big brother read how to heal a glue gun burn.
I have a scar that is from 5th grade and in 7th and it looks like if i stab it it could be like jello, when it happened i screamed and ran to the bathroom and poured water until hard then i pulled it off. It didnt hurt until i pushed on it then it was bubbly i popped the blister and yellowish stuff came out it didnt hurt but i suggest just put a band-aid on it overnight then just wash gently and DONT play with the skin it could pop idk it looks like a teardrop ontye bottom of my wrist.
omg this hurts like hell my finger is like white where it contacted and when i take it out of the water it just starts burning again help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try to slowly increase the time that you take your finger out of the water. leave it out for ten seconds first, then put it back for a minute. it will hurt, but the pain goes away after a few minutes.
I am doing a school project, and i dropped a popsicle stick with the hot glue on it. i pulled it off without thinking and the skin came off. please, i don’t know wat to do to it, but it hurts
put neosporin or something similar on it to help protect your skin. wrap it in gauze, and if you need to, ice it. if the open sores don’t get better in a few days, go see a doctor.
Yeah, I was doing a project with hot clue.. and it dripped on the top of my middle finger.. i didn’t think at first and wiped it off on my jeans.. didn’t notice i pulled the skin off until i looked.. it’s been burning for the last 3-4 hours..
Thanks for the advice! I got a tiny bit on my finger today at art, panicked, and grabbed the piece of cardboard I had just squirted glue on. Now my hand is all wrapped up in gauze…
shes a pretty girl inside and out love you Wetmore family
Thanks For The Help
i was hot gluing shoes and a big chuck of glue can out and i got scared that it was all gonna fall on my moms table that without think i grab all the ht glue in my hand. no skin has ripped but my hand is burning and theres been lots of cry anything that can help?
I got hot glue on one of my fingers several days ago and I soaked it in cold water at first. Now it has hardened and I can’t get it off. Do you recommend olive oil or something else to remove it? Thanks for your help in this matter.
it still hurts after i put cold water on it and a bandaid. its been on 4 like an hour, but it still hurts although i cant see the burn.
my hot glue gun got jammed then i press the button and it fell on my hand
Use Colloidal Silver Gel, it helps healing and pain and reduces risk of scars. It is available on amazon.
what if you dont have gauze could you use just a bandaid
i just covered three fingers in hot glue, it REAAAALLLYYYY hurts, did everthing in this article, any advice ??
Your article for treatment is confusing. You say if glue is stuck to use olive OIL on it to remove. last sentence you say to never use OIL, butter or ice. It was my under standing that those substances retain the heat and cause further penetration of the burn. And if the burn is bad enough it makes the cleanup proceedure in the emergency room worse beacause it is not water soluble!
When I said to use olive oil it was just to be applied to the glue with a cotton ball to try to soften/remove the glue from your skin not to apply to the burn. Sorry for the confusion!
I removed the glue right away, when the project with hot glue landed on my hand. When I did that, a patch of layered skin came out with the glue. I put a bandaid on it, but when I washed my hand, water got inside. I thought it was from leftover water, but I found out my hand had started to infect. I put another new bandaid, that had silver (antibiotic) on it, so that was fine during the night. Today, I took a shower, not getting my hand wet, I took the bandaid to let some air in, It’s very sensitive, but it is still oozing with some puss, just red, but I won’t cover it now. I’ll just leave it alone and see if that makes it better.
i dropped my hot glue gun on my arm and now it is 3 months later is there any thing i can do to remove scar??
There is a cream called ‘Mederma’ sold over the counter that is supposed to help diminish scars.
i was doing my project and my glue gun got jammed so i cept pressingon it and finnally it came out on a huge buntch and burned half of my whole tow it hurts really badly its blisterd tooo

I was just doing a project for a friend with hot glue-burning like heck- and tried some honey on it. At first it burned a lot, but the longer I kept it on, i found it has gotten better and burned less. Thanks for ya help!! 😀

❤
my hand hurts badly and there is a deep wound! what should i do?????
I was making christmas ornaments with my students today. I got glue on my pants and accidentally burned my pointer finger. There’s now a white blister without an open wound. I also found on the web that PURE Vanilla Extract works to take the pain away. I tried it and sure enough, the pain was gone and the blister didn’t get any worse 🙂
YEAH I JUST GOT ONE MY THUMB HURTS SO BAD BLOW BLOW
I feel bad my friends finger is like all white now I don’t know what to do ?
all right fist thing DON’T put ice on the burn direct. I have a bur so rap the ice with a rag a place it on the burn. If that doesn’t work try vasseline then put a band-aid on it. If none of that helped then dip it in water for 1-8 minutes.
I feel bad cuz my friends finger is all white what do I do ?
It really hurts and I have a big essay tommorow that I have to write. BY HAND!
Does it burn paper?
i soked it in ice water for 10 min. and it still burns! what should i do?
Hot glued my butt. Not joking. One day I was wearing these really short daisy dukes and me and my friend were bored and started hot gluing popsicle sticks together (we ran out of bottled glue) and I was lying on my stomach and my friend was kneeling next to me. She must have dropped some off of the gun because next thing I know there is a blistering pain on my rear. It hurts to sit. What now!?
MY HAND IS BURNING its going white help
darn those hot glue guns..i just dropped a big chunk on my finger,,tried to pull it off straight away..theres a big white blister and a gash on my finger,,burns like hell,,,i put an ice cube on it after i ran the cube under water,,,then dried it and covered with gause and band aids…that was about 30 mins ago..it feels like my finger is on fire…i will take a look tomorrow after the burning feeling has subsided…I HATE HOTGUNS
I was using a hot glue gun and glue dropped onto my finger, it was burning so I pulled it off. It’s been an hour and nothing’s working. It’s not blistering it’s a first degree burn and I have tried honey, vinegar and a pickle! Nothing works, please help!
About how many days until it stops hurting and also wat do u do if u have already removed the glue and skin peels off wat stuff do u use for pain? Do u still use the same stuff as u said?
OMGGGGG ! i was trying to stick something with hot glue and it slipped and fell right onto my thigh, my immediate reaction was to brush it off and now my left hand is burn tooooo! it HURTS!!!!! :”'(
When treating burns, all you need first is some anti-inflammatory stuff and then an agent to hasten wound healing like topical nutraceuticals. :;:’:

O.m.g. I was just puting a button on my card and the hot glue sliped out of the holes in the button and got stuck on my finger for like 3 minutes 😭😭😭😭
I got a glob of the stuff on my finger this morning. it doesnt hurt anymore and it is a white color. What is going on here?
I used ice for 10 minutes should I be worried
vanilla extract doesnt work and honey doesnt work
I used a hot glue gun today at work, a box feel from the shelf and the glue gun slipped onto my wrist. I have a red, purple and white area now. My co workers helped with burn cream and bandages, but it still hurts. I’m wondering of I need to call my doctor on this.
I’ve zapped myself badly twice now with a hot glue gun and recommend the following – hold affected area under cold running water for as long as you can, or submerge in a deep bowl or bucket of water. (Or shallow bath, if it’s your butt – you poor thing!)
I was given an icepack the second time I burnt my hand, and it made it hurt worse — just read that it can damage tissues in the area if an ice pack isn’t properly shielded.
Apply aloe vera gel (I get it in a jar from health food store), and dress it as lightly as you can with gauze pads and plasters if you have them. (The first time I had to make a mercy dash to the supermarket at midnight to get all this with my hand wrapped in a dishtowel).
If you have a plant, you can use it neat.
I would only do this if your burn was the white-blister kind (second-degree). Beyond that I would probably take it to the ER.

Finally, take some fast-acting pain relief (Nuromol worked really well the first time).
This is good advice too:

Some good tips here – they recommend keeping ice water not far from your craft station (away from the plug, though)

and I wish someone would hurry up and put Kathleen Alexander’s great idea for hot-glue gloves into production 🙂

my daughter burned her arm with the glue gun an its raw but now she’s got hard swelling all around it what do i do is this nomal or do we need take her for medical help it happend today at school
I got hot glue on my first finger working on a school project, had it in cold/cool water for a lot of periods of time that lasted about a minute. I put ice on it, but then just put it down and the constant burning went away. I got a pretty good sized blister, probably a centimeter long and maybe a half or 1/3 centimeters thick. I haven’t wrapped it all day, we don’t have any sterile gauze or anything, how long can it go without the gauze?
i was glueing something and it fell on my leg so i immediately wiped it off now all the skin has come off burns like heck!!
uh just asking a question, since this is comment was 2013, what happened after? i’m in the same situation but it’s on my thighs and i applied honey on it and wrapped it with the transparent stretchable thingy. My skin peeled off and i wanted to ask if i could get any infection or what so ever
I was doing a science project when the glue gun got clogged so I took the old glue out and put in a new stick and I pushed the stick when a whole chunk of glue fell on my thigh so I rushed and rubbed it off when my skin came of and now my left hand is blistered up I’m only 12
Their is a quarter size raw burn on my wrist and it hurts like hell

Please let me know if this ok with you. Cheers!
ouch this burn burns, but its nice to know im not alone.
I was doing a craft project that stated to apply the hot glue, let it cool but not harden, and then mold it. i guess i didn’t wait long enough…i burned the bottom corner of my palm (farthest from my thumb) I’ve had it in cold water for 7 minutes and the rest of my hand is going numb but the burn still stings…what do i do?
Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites I
stumbleupon every day. It will always be interesting to read content from other authors
and practice something from their sites.
I’m sorry you burned your butt, but you gave me an awfully good laugh! You can laugh at me too because I think I have hot glue under my skin on my thumb. I was making a mum and got hot glue on my thumb. Years ago I learned to wait until the glue hardens to pull it off. Hurts like hell, but it’s better than pulling the skin off!!! Run to the sink and turn on cool tap water, put the affected area in water and count or sing or something until it stops burning. Then you can carefully peel the glue off. It won’t be completely hard so it will peel off without adding anything. When that’s done, you’ll still have a burn but it’s much less painful than if the skin is ripped off.
But DON’T get more hot glue in the same place! By that time, I had accidentally caught the blister on a staple (was making a mum) so there was a tiny hole in the blister. A week later and it still feels like there is hot glue on my finger even though I went through the same process. The blister never fully opened but is now brown. It doesn’t hurt, and there appears to be no infection but this can’t be good.
I Burnt my finger with my glue gun making a gift for my teacher and I put cold water, ice, and honey on it but it didn’t help at all
i burned my finger three days ago n it dosent hurt but the skin never came off its just red and just feels like dead skin what so i do cut it off or just leave it alone its ugly and feels gross
My 7 year old just got hot glue on the top of his hand earlier this eve. He screamed, ran into the kitchen, and laid on the floor. I had no idea what had happened. When he told me, I had him hold his hand under cold water. Then I tried something I had just read about a few days ago.
I opened an egg and put the white part on the burn. My son quit crying instantly. I asked him if it still hurt and he said sort of. Well… we all know that a burn like will not just “sort of” hurt after only a minute or 2. I was totally impressed.
I came to this site trying to learn how to get the glue off without pulling skin off with it. But as I was reading, my son pulled it off. One of the spots did take skin with it but he acted like it didn’t hurt much. I then put more egg white on just for good measure and made him keep it on for several minutes. He has blisters on his hand but it’s been several hours and he hasn’t complained or comments at all about any pain at all.
I am impressed!! And now I gotta go research why egg white on burns is so beneficial! Cuz I can’t remember what the article said about that.
Making a model of the respiratory system ..burned my finger with hot glue trying to glue my alveoli. ..As long as I keep complaining to my family and keep reading how badly everyone else is feeling..I’ll be ok
Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and all. However think about if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”!
Your content is excellent but with images and videos, this blog could certainly be one of
the best in its niche. Amazing blog!
I am looking forward to buy a hot glue gun in the coming few days. I am a 14 year old and I am worried that the hot glue can give me burns in some case. My question is that can I use it without any adult supervision and whether I should buy it or no. Is using superglue other than the hot glue gun a better option? Please help.
Hi, Clueless…Of course buy one if you would like. As with anything else, be careful, use good sense, be aware when you are using it, not distracted, watch for drips. Everything in life has risks! You just have to use good judgement whether you’re using a glue gun, driving a car, even riding a bike. At 14 you should not need adult supervision but that is up to your parents. Be sure you have a paper plate to rest it on and don’t have it near anything that can be ruined if you get it on something. Hot glue is great for a lot of things. I would look online ‘what are hot glue guns good for’? Good luck!
